A Systematic Literature Review on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Research Studies

Abstract

The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is the systematic inquiry of pedagogical practices implemented by educators and the analysis of the subsequent student learning outcomes. This paper intends to present the themes and common limitations of various SoTL projects identified through qualitative analysis. In total, forty-seven SoTL manuscripts were evaluated according to predetermined criteria based on the researchers’ past experiences with SoTL as well as a thorough review of the literature. The systematic literature review and subsequent qualitative analysis of SoTL studies published between 2012-2020 present a detailed understanding of SoTL research elements and confirm the existence of strengths and weaknesses, as well as common pitfalls, which could be threats to the validity of legitimate SoTL research.
