Immersive Virtual Reality as a Change Agent in Language Learning

Abstract

This research explores the affordances and constraints of language learning in a virtual reality (VR) environment. In our study, VR technologies act as a powerful agent of change in student learning. VR technologies allow students to step into the teaching space and move around, which offers a situated and contextualized type of knowledge exchange. VR transforms an everyday classroom environment with first-hand experiences that develop language fluency, increase knowledge retention and transfer, and enhance student agency and engagement. We provide empirical evidence showing the value of VR for empowered language learning, and how students can use VR to identify and navigate their learning needs and aspirations.
