Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to critically explore and reflect upon my own experiences of designing and implementing an early childhood place-based school in a transnational space. Towards these ends I ask: What does place-based education look like in early childhood learning? In what ways do local places directly relate to young students’ experiences of the world? Using autoethnographic methods via Ellis et. al., (2000), I draw upon Vander Ark, Liebtag, & McClennen’s (2020) six place-based design principles to explore place-based approaches to curriculum design in early childhood education. Furthermore, I argue that place-based methods might be generative accompanied by play-based approaches and even more direct approaches to learning, such as the science of reading.
