Integrating creative and artistic productions into the classroom requires a re-examination of group roles that is more in line with production practices. We traced students’ roles throughout the pre production, production, and post production process in two media arts productions to determine the connection among roles, group goals, and the production process. We found that media arts productions create a need for group roles that are structured, yet flexible enough to evolve in order to meet the needs of production and evolving goals. Our research provides design considerations for successful media arts productions that can be applied to other complex projects that move through phases of ideation to creation.
