Community Advocacy for Equity in Special Education During COVID in The Bahamas

Abstract

Community advocacy has always been the driving force behind special education in The Bahamas. This study examined the types of advocacy taking place at various levels – national, community, individual - during COVID among different sectors within the special education community. We use select data from a community-wide study on special education during COVID in The Bahamas. Participants included parents, teachers, principals, service providers, and community partners/allies. Data collection included one-on-one interviews and surveys that contained open and closed ended items. Findings revealed various actions taken up by the different sectors to support equitable education for students with special needs. We discuss these findings in relation to indigenous practices, home to school relations, and implications for teacher preparation programs.
