Literature Review: The Formal Leadership Development Programs and Pedagogical Practices

Abstract

Leadership development programs have proliferated at American colleges and universities over the past two decades. As leadership development has received increased attention, more scholars have explored leadership competencies, programs and pedagogies. This study is a systematic literature review on formal leadership development programs for college students, answering the following research questions: (1) How do researchers or educators conceptualize college student leadership?; (2) Are formal leadership development programs effective in improving student leadership capacities?; and (3) What are empirically-supported pedagogical practices to foster leadership development for college students? The findings provide descriptions of commonly-used theoretical frameworks, four categories of common pedagogical practices, effectiveness of formal leadership development programs, and empirically-supported links between specific pedagogies and leadership competencies.
