In Roundtable Session: Early Childhood Education and Mathematics
This study examined the implementation and effectiveness of a statewide early math professional learning and coaching model. The model used a train-the-trainer approach to build educational leaders’ and educators’ positive math identities and raise their confidence, knowledge, and capacity to support children’s math learning. This study gathered survey, focus group, and observational data from 91 educational leaders and 6 statewide coordinators. By the end of their participation, educational leaders reported a decrease in their negative feelings towards math, and an increase in their confidence in their knowledge of early math development, math teaching practices, and math training and coaching skills. This study contributes to the scientific literature by studying an innovative, systems approach to providing professional development in early math.
