Competency-based education (CBE) is designed to support a more personalized learning experience for students, and thus, a more equitable education. However, few studies examine CBE as a tool for promoting educational equity. The purpose of the qualitative case study discussed here is to create a foundation for further research on CBE by exploring what practices CBE educators see as supporting equity goals. Findings show that educators see CBE as supporting equity goals through personalized learning, “cooperative learning,” and a culture of engagement, not classroom management.
