Women of color in the academy deal with tokenization and outdated attitudes that often create disparities. In general, the aim of this paper is to examine the intersecting policies and academic contexts that confer or maintain disadvantages for women of color faculty, specifically in departments of educational administration. More specifically, we use an academic cost construct to examine and analyze how women of color are treated once promoted to administrative positions; and further unpack how these administrative roles are articulated through individual and organizational phenomena. We used John Henrysim as our theoretical framework and collaborative autoethnography as our methodological tool. Our findings reveal that we are “space invaders” who must pay four invisible taxes.
