Toward Crip Ways of Narrating Desired Futures

Abstract

A growing body of educational research lifts up the storied social dreams and imagination of nondominant communities to inform curriculum and pedagogies. Yet, disability tends to be written out of the future, narratively figured as ‘untellable’ or a problem to overcome. Against this impasse, I consider how disability might enter desired futures of youth by exploring stories that four trans and queer teens constructed with digital artifacts to represent the future in June-July 2020, attuned to the meanings they make of experiences with disability. Theoretical frames of disability justice and crip theory, as well as my own disability, guide my inquiry into crip ways of narrating desired futures with implications for critical curriculum and pedagogies.
