This mixed methods study analyzed written and video reflections of second grade students who participated in an engineering design challenge for evidence of empathy, ideation, and conceptual understanding. Findings from the study suggest that video reflection can be an effective way to assess students’ conceptual understanding. The findings also suggest there is a need for explicitly teaching design thinking in the engineering design process.
