In this paper, we aim to characterize decoding as a computational practice that involves reading and interpreting code to recognize and to see how it instantiates scientific processes. We draw on video-recordings of artifact-based interviews with 5 sixth grade students and a teacher workshop with 3 middle school teachers. We analyze this data to identify illuminating episodes that help us characterize how students and teachers take on decoding in their work. Through this analysis, we show how participants manifested different levels of decoding and how participants’ ability to decode seemed discontinuous. In the discussion, we reflect on the importance of attending to decoding as a computational practice and its value for integrated CT-science learning.
