Given the potential of university extension (outreach) in terms of bringing the university and the society closer, in this article, we reflect on the dialogue between higher education internationalization and extension. A literature review allows us to point out, among other aspects: 1. The fragility of the interaction between these two university dimensions; 2. The predominance of the understanding of the university-society relationship as synonymous of university-industry collaboration, with internationalization understood as a means to intensify this partnership; and 3. The tendency for Latin American studies to be less reductionist when dealing with university extension and the relationship between internationalization and extension.
