Women in Academia: Understanding the Challenges During the Pandemic

Abstract

The pandemic has disrupted the way that most women in academia are able to do their work. Compared to men, women are the primary caregivers in many homes and families, and their care work during this time has affected their ability to do the deep work necessary for progress in academia. This study aims to contribute to existing knowledge on women in academia and women in leadership by examining the challenges faced by women in academia during the pandemic. We argue that gender equality is beyond a moral and social imperative; it is an economic necessity.
