Abstract

In addressing persistent inequities in schooling, the systems and mainstream classroom discourse practices that continue to marginalize students from underrepresented groups need further consideration and examination. In this study, we developed a coding scheme that focuses on identifying features of equitable discourse in classrooms and re-imagining opportunities for possible hybrid learning spaces. The resulting coding scheme includes four major components: 1) discourse frames, 2) discourse format, 3) discourse space, and 4) agency. This codebook is one step towards creating environments that are inclusive and thoughtful about the ways in which students could get to fully be part of learning.
