Speculative Analytic Participation Structures: A Critical Imaginary of Contribution, Intergenerationality, and Multi-Sitedness in Microgenetic Research

Abstract

In this conceptual paper we imagine transformative research participation structures (Goffman, 1981; Goodwin, 1994) through methodological speculation focusing on micro-genetic details of interaction analysis (IA) research practices. Drawing on video data from the Learning How to Look and Listen (2016) conference, we examine participation frameworks emerging during a group analysis session using a conventional IA group viewing protocol. We offer three lenses for exploring data analysis interactions to imagine speculative research practices toward new possibilities for scholarship and the scholars who produce it, particularly those who have been historically marginalized. The conceptual lenses of intergenerationality, contribution, and multi-sited-ness serve as analytic tools for illuminating inequitable aspects of taken-for-granted IA participation structures and as design principles for speculative IA participation structures.
