Remote Classes in Brazilian Sign Language for Deaf Students: Challenges in Promoting Accessibility

Abstract

This study problematizes the Brazilian educational system and the process of deaf students' inclusion during the COVID-19 Pandemic. The objective is to analyze the pedagogical content in Brazilian Sign Language - Libras -, called “Connect with Libras ” inside the online platform “Study at Home”, created by the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil and used by public schools for remote classes. We use decolonial theories in this study (Boveda et al, 2019; Walsh, 2009). This qualitative research describes and analyzes pedagogical materials to understand the main challenges to include deaf students during remote periods. The material has an inclusive purpose of using Libras as a main language, however the content access is restricted to Portuguese and Libras subjects.
