This qualitative study was conceptualized in anticipation of the return to in-person teaching for two middle school teachers. The purpose of this study was to examine the experiences of these two teachers as they navigated teaching in the midst of multiple adjustments to their regular teaching practices due to the implementation and continued enforcement of COVID-19 safety protocols such as social distancing, wearing of face masks, and shortened school days. Despite their expectations for the school year, the teachers found that the COVID-19 protocols allowed for more equitable students access to the curriculum as well as higher levels of engagement and academic achievement. The teachers discuss the ways teaching during the pandemic school year have changed them for the better.
