Cultivating Equitable Curriculum: Democratic Citizenship and Global Perspectives

Fri, April 22, 8:00 to 9:30am PDT (8:00 to 9:30am PDT), SIG Virtual Rooms, SIG-Democratic Citizenship in Education Virtual Roundtable Session Room

Abstract

Cultivating equitable educational systems for the 21st century renders it necessary to reimagine and redefine education as both a democratic process and outcome. This proposed roundtable responds to the challenges posed by nation-centric and neoliberal tendencies by situating teacher preparation within principles of global citizenship education. Three teacher educators reflect on the processes of curriculum (re)design to address global inequities using a social justice orientation. Specifically, the goal of this roundtable is to present ways to deepen teacher and student learning in ways that will challenge and disrupt global systemic inequality. The discussion that will emerge from this roundtable is timely, relevant, and important given the current rhetoric and threats to critical race theory being permissible in formal schooling spaces.
