Don't Stop at Test Scores: Envisioning Antiracist College Application Research and Practice

Abstract

The opposition of affirmative action and the use of race within college admissions gave rise to both race-conscious and race-evasive alternatives to achieve diversity. With the likely demise of affirmative action, college admissions need a new framework to continue to address inequity. Combining anti-racism and racial project conceptions, this scholarly conceptual paper envisions a new anti-racist education project (AREP) framework that directly tackles inequality and the everyday meaning of racism in the college application process. First, I highlight how the presumed neutrality of some admission practices create near-perfect conditions for inequality. Then, I critique and compare current race-conscious and race-evasive college admissions practices with an anti-racism lens, along with implications for research and practice.
