Latent Profile Analysis of Executive Functioning Among Kindergarteners and First Graders at Risk for Behavior Problems

Abstract

Given the link between executive function (EF) and maladaptive behaviors, early identification and school-based services are critical for students at-risk for EF dysfunction and problematic behaviors during early elementary school. Yet, there is a paucity of EF research with students at-risk for maladaptive behaviors in kindergarten and first grade. The current study identified EF profiles of these students using latent profile analysis and determined the extent to which profile membership related to problem behaviors, social-emotional skills, and language abilities. Results indicated a theoretically supported, three-profile solution of mildly, moderately, and clinically at-risk EF profiles. Differences between EF profiles were noted, such that students within the clinically at-risk EF profile demonstrated more problematic behaviors, less social competence, and greater language difficulties.
