Higher Education Destination Choices: Motives of International and Local Students in Luxembourg

Abstract

This study investigates higher education destination choices in international and local students, based on the example of a highly internationalized higher education system. It asks what the motivational patterns of local and international students regarding their decision to study in Luxembourg are, and how these patterns differ in regard to students’ sociodemographic background characteristics and students’ origin. Using the Luxembourgish national student survey, we link the concept of pull factors in study destination choice to social production function theory, which connects individual goals to different dimensions of students’ social and psychological well-being. We find an interplay of personal attributes and study destination-related characteristics and provide implications for other contexts of internationalization.
