Abstract

This study analyzed how Native Americans and Tribal Colleges and Universities are represented in community college peer-reviewed published research. Utilizing a document analysis design, six peer-review journals committed to community college research were searched online using the terms: Native American, American Indian, Indian, Indigenous, and Tribal Colleges and Universities. The journal searches yielded 1,993 article results with only 17 articles in specific relation to Native American peoples or TCUs. The three findings of this study include the reinforcement that tribal colleges and universities provide culturally relevant opportunities to aid in student success, challenging stereotypes and promoting Indigenous learning at non-Native community colleges, and how the word “native” can be misused out of context in higher education.
