Widening the Angles of Literacy Research: Using Design Experiments to Develop and Enhance a New Early Literacy Intervention

Mon, April 25, 2:30 to 4:00pm PDT (2:30 to 4:00pm PDT), San Diego Convention Center, Floor: Upper Level, Sails Pavillion

Abstract

We share findings from our work in a research and development (R&D) Reading Lab that we established to guide the further refinement of a literacy intervention. We used an ABAB single-case design to test the impact of the increase in book difficulty at two levels, a lower level (Phase A), and a higher gradient (Phase B). Using HLM, we found that, although accuracy was significantly lower during Phase B (M=92.75) than Phase A (M=94), students had significantly greater average WIF scores and made significantly greater OSELA and Slosson gains in Phase B, when the rise in text level was steeper, compared to Phase A. Work that emanates from the Lab may broaden the possibilities for research in intervention design.
