Digital Solidarity: Engaging With Literature to Explore Virtual Service-Learning in Higher Education

Abstract

While the COVID-19 pandemic poses challenges regarding accommodation and accessibility of service-learning practice in higher education institutions, service-learning professionals have actively responded to the community engagement in times of crisis and have adjusted service-learning activities creatively. Focusing on the implementations and impacts of the pandemic-era-adjusted practice as well as the practice of non-pandemic virtual service learning, a literature review is conducted. By examining the advantages, limitations, and rationale of non-pandemic virtual service learning, and exploring the impacts virtual of service learning on students, institutions, and community partners during the pandemic, this review aimed to advance virtual service-learning, understand the perceptions from students, institutions, and community partners, as well as direct further research to thrive service-learning practice in a post-pandemic era.
