STEM Higher Education for Black Refugees: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract

STEM higher education has become an increasingly important topic in research. As efforts to diversify STEM become more expansive, it is imperative that Black refugee students are not overlooked. In this conceptual paper, the authors answer the question: what are the major categories of scholarship that illuminate the state of STEM higher education access for Black students of refugee backgrounds? Using Social Cognitive Career Theory and Possible Selves Theory as our guiding frameworks, we conducted a systematic literature review of 77 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters published in a 20-year span. We arrived at three categories of scholarship: (1) Refugees and Higher Education, (2) Students of Color and STEM Higher Education, and (3) Social Capital Related to College Going.
