The Intersections of Race, Place, and College Access for Rural Latinx Students: A Literature Review

Sat, April 23, 2:30 to 4:00pm PDT (2:30 to 4:00pm PDT), San Diego Convention Center, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

This literature review analyzes constructions of rurality in the literature on rural students and college access through a Latino Critical Race Theory (LatCrit) framework. This paper critically interrogates the centering of whiteness in rural education research and challenges the exclusion of rural Latinx students in educational research. Findings demonstrate that issues of race and racism are rarely explored in research studies that focus on rurality and access to higher education. The lack of application of critical lenses like LatCrit and interrogation of structural issues like race and racism lead to an erasure of rural People of Color, particularly rural Latinx students, whose presence in the United States has substantially increased since 1990 and continue to struggle with college access.
