School Choice: Implications for Equity

Abstract

Using Murray Edelman’s Political Spectacle Theory as a conceptual framework, a systematic review and meta-analysis of legislation, research reports, and various media sources revealed a multitude of ways in which state and federal school choice legislation and other sources have mislead parents and the public with regard to how tax dollars are spent and the financial impact school choice legislation has had on public schools. Educators must continue to battle against the negative impact of the political spectacle and emerge stronger by staying focused on providing local communities the needed resources. Publicly sharing these efforts in a positive way will assist education in reimagining and transforming into a sustainable system that is truly just and equitable for all its constituents.
