Exploring Community College and Transfer Student Access to International Exchange Programs

Mon, April 25, 4:15 to 5:45pm PDT (4:15 to 5:45pm PDT), Division Virtual Rooms, Division J - Section 2a: College Student Access Virtual Roundtable Session Room

Abstract

International exchange programs such as study abroad provide numerous benefits to college students (Costello, 2015; Mohajeri Norris & Gillespie, 2009; Tamilla & Ledgerwood, 2019). Yet research has shown that community college and transfer students experience barriers to international opportunities, including finances, family obligations, and when to go abroad (Amani & Kim, 2017; Stroud, 2010). To mitigate financial barriers, the U.S. offers specialized funding through the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship and the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. However, community college and transfer students may be missing from these applicant pools. This mixed methods study sought to ascertain what prospective and current transfer students from community colleges knew about these two awards and to identify factors that influence their motivation to apply.
