Long-Term Influence of an Early Warning System on Student Attendance, Achievement, Behavior, and Graduation

Abstract

Students who are disengaged from school and a behind in learning need interventions to get them back on track to graduation. To ensure that students receive the help they need, schools can implement an early warning system, with processes to match students with appropriate interventions. The present paper examines the effects of three early warning system interventions for 9th grade students on their 9-12th grade outcomes. Results indicate that 9th grade students in schools with coaches who checked data consistently, met with individual students, and met with groups of students, had fewer days in suspension, higher GPA, and higher on-time graduation compared to students who were 9th grade students in schools with coaches who did not do these activities.
