Equity Challenges for Remote Learning During COVID-19: A Comparison of Chinese and U.S. Teachers' Perspectives

Abstract

Although technology makes it possible for teachers and students to keep pace with their traditional classes during pandemics, this transformation poses challenges that make educational equity a primary concern to educators and policymakers. In this study, interviews with teachers in both the U.S. and China offer a perspective on the concerns that both groups have about remote learning as it has an impact on the equitable access of all their students to teaching and learning. teachers from both countries noted the challenges on technology devices and network infrastructure, re-design of curriculum and pedagogy, and family engagement. Due to different cultural and social contexts, the strategies to cope with these challenges are varied in these two countries.
