Abstract

Fetters and Freshwater (2015) promoted a 1 + 1 = 3 integration approach that allows researchers to combine inferences stemming from the quantitative and qualitative components of a mixed methods research study. A problem with this approach is that integration occurs at the data interpretation stage, thereby potentially resulting in non-optimal integration. Contrastingly, a 1 + 1 = 1 integration approach represents full integration of qualitative and quantitative components at all stages of the mixed methods research process. Therefore, we outline how integration can occur at the research conceptualization, research planning, research implementation, research dissemination, and research utilization stages.
