Use Peer Learning Facilitators for Near-Peer Support in Classroom Assessment Courses

Abstract

Competency and confidence in classroom assessment is important for pre-service teachers as they prepare to become classroom ready beginning teachers. This study looked at how a peer learning facilitator (PLF) can be used to enhance student experience in a classroom assessment course. Pre-service teachers (N =72) completed a questionnaire designed to measure student competency, confidence and conception of classroom assessment across a semester. Open-ended responses indicated the PLF contributed by providing relevance, clarity and being someone in which they identified. For the student serving as a PLF, they also had positive changes in all three constructs but reported being more confident in talking about classroom assessment concepts when communicating with other professionals and greater appreciation for classroom assessment in school environments.
