Reimagining Education and Schooling for Return Migrants: How Can the Mexican Educational System Foster Educational Equity?

Mon, April 25, 9:45 to 11:15am PDT (9:45 to 11:15am PDT), SIG Virtual Rooms, SIG-Peace Education Virtual Paper Session Room

Abstract

This presentation aims to show how return migrants reflect on the educational and linguistic challenges and necessities they had when returning to Mexico after living several years in the United States. After suffering discriminatory acts, bullying and rejection from teachers and Mexican peers, these return migrants reflect on what the Mexican education system can do in order to foster educational equity. Also, as they are current English teachers, they offer their vision on how they embrace their current positions as educators and agents of change. Their reflections offer suggestions about what the Mexican educational system could do in order to foster educational equity for those return migrants who are navigating a blurry zone when they first move back to Mexico.
