This qualitative study explored how faculty at a flagship institution in the American Southwest redesigned its principal preparation program to prepare diverse candidates for school leadership in predominately Native-serving schools. Faculty collaborated with Native scholars and Tribal members to identify the components of leadership that would honor Indigenous knowledge systems and cultural practices. The redesigned approach was examined from the perspective of three cohorts of aspiring school leaders. Findings revealed the importance of instilling the Indigenous voice. The lessons learned may be useful for other institutions and communities who are invested in increasing the diversity of the school leadership workforce.
