Teacher Candidates' Perspectives on Financial Pressures in Teacher Preparation

Abstract

Addressing the financial barriers that push prospective teachers out of the profession, especially teachers of color, is an essential aspect of cultivating equitable educational systems. Our interview study centers on the experiences and perspectives of eight teacher candidates who face financial barriers, offering unique insights for policymakers and teacher educators. Our findings indicate that undergraduate and graduate teacher candidates experience financial strain, impacting their personal lives, studies, and fieldwork. Study participants frame finances as a significant barrier to equitable teacher preparation. We call on educational researchers to join local, state, and national efforts to address financial barriers to becoming a teacher.
