Navigating the Hidden Curriculum During COVID-19: How Parents Experienced School Expectations During Remote Learning

Abstract

The shift to remote learning during COVID-19 required teachers, parents, and students to upend traditional methods, tools, locations, and roles involved in teaching and learning. With students learning from home, many parents became more involved in their children’s schooling. Using over 240 parent surveys and 41 interviews, I examine how Catholic school parents perceived school expectations and navigated remote learning with their children. Preliminary findings suggest that parents received few directives from schools about how to assist their children. Parents often felt on their own to determine how to help their children succeed, providing additional evidence of the hidden curriculum in schools that can lead to unequal student outcomes.
