Leveraging Cultural Capital: A Rural Ghanaian Primary School's Efforts to Launch COVID-19 Distance Learning Programming

Abstract

In a joint statement of the African Union (AU) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF, 2020) to the African education sector on the continuity of learning during COVID-19, the two organizations encouraged the development of digital connectivity throughout all regions in Africa, online learning, Internet safety, and the use of multiple modes of information and communications technology (ICT) including radio, television, podcasts, and e-learning, and teachers as facilitators and motivators of learning. This paper also explores how community cultural wealth (Yosso, 2005) augments traditional rural disaster and emergency management frameworks (Kapucu et al., 2014; Mayunga, 2007) to show how the school leveraged their social capital to create viable distance learning solutions during COVID-19.
