Each One, Teach One: Building Theory and Instrumentation to Address Race Across the Undergraduate Curriculum

Abstract

Institutions of higher education (IHE) must prepare graduates to thrive in a domestic and global community. Cultivating equitable education systems requires faculty and administrators to examine the historic and contemporary purposes of higher education and to identify and redress persistent inequities. IHEs have a responsibility to prepare graduates with agency for racial justice. We share preliminary findings from this in-progress study and tool development project. Specifically, we are conducting a study at our institution examining undergraduate course syllabi to determine (a) the extent to which and (b) how courses address diversity broadly, and race/racism and antiracism specifically. We aim to develop a theoretically-grounded tool for instructors to examine and enhance the undergraduate curriculum to intentionally address issues of race.
