Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the virtual field trip (VFT) became a distance learning option enabling students to virtually explore informal science learning environments (ISLEs) like science centers, museums, zoos, gardens, and more. We piloted a VFT program to deliver STEM experiences to ninety seven students in the second grade and assessed student pre-post attitudes toward STEM, as well as student interest in visiting the ISLE. Surprisingly, the VFT appeared to decrease positive student attitudes toward STEM, although student interest in visiting the ISLE increased. As a mixed-methods project collaboration between elementary schools, a university, and an ISLE, this work offers student perspectives to consider in reevaluating curriculum and program development for VFTs.
