GBTQ+ Involvement in Men of Color Programs: Capturing Student Attitudes and Perceptions

Fri, April 22, 11:30am to 1:00pm PDT (11:30am to 1:00pm PDT), San Diego Convention Center, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

Through qualitative methods, this comparative case study examines the attitudes and perceptions that students involved in men of color programs hold of their GBTQ+ men of color peers. Drawing from the contributions of critical feminist sholars helps explore how men-dominated spaces may have unintended consequences for GBTQ+ men of color in postsecondary institutions, and in men of color programs in particular. Data draws from interviews and focus groups with men of color at two, four-year comprehensive universities. The findings highlight that while men of color programs are credited for exposing young men of color to topics of sexuality, there are also instances of heternomative programming. We provide recommendations for practitioners and men of color praxis, more broadly.
