Abstract. In this study, I explored if and how elementary teachers demonstrated empathy for Black students in the midst of remote learning during the 2020-2021 academic year. Black children were the primary unit of analysis in this study because they were uniquely impacted by both the devastating impact of the Coronavirus along with the racial reckoning of 2020. Utilizing Chezare Warren’s (2013) empathy framework this study yielded four primary thematic findings: 1) empathic concern/perspective taking, 2) application of new knowledge 3) student feedback and 4) the effects of Covid-19.
