Black Men Navigating and Negotiating Racism in the Historically Black College and University Context: A Gendered Perspective

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine how Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) prepare Black men to respond to racism in predominantly white workplace environments and predominantly white graduate schools. A process operationalized from the data based on the gendered responses of Black men explains the process. Gaining an understanding of college-to-career transitions and maximizing productive educational outcomes are the primary goals of this study. Practical implications for HBCU students, faculty and administrators at HBCUs are offered.
