Abstract

Public affairs communicators on historically White campuses are part of a growing number of professional staff. They may work as marketers to build the reputation of the institution, writers to help frame the narrative around issues the institution values, or crisis communicators to mitigate controversy when appropriate, often related to diversity, equity, and inclusion, particularly related to race. Yet this group, who serve as the public voice of the institution, remains understudied. A small number of them are Black women. This narrative analysis provides understanding of Black women public affairs professionals' stories of their experience communicating about race and ethnicity while navigating the campus.
