Peeking Into the A.I. Hype: Investigating Research Trends in Artificial Intelligence in Education

Abstract

This paper has two goals: 1) Present an in-depth analysis of the research trends of the International Artificial Intelligence in Education (IAIED) Society through co-authorship networks and keyword analysis, discussing its implications to the larger research community, and 2) Provide methodological contributions to the analysis of author and topic networks within multidisciplinary communities in education research. Using 949 publications from 1915 authors, we extract time-evolving co-authorship networks and utilize them as a proxy for the collaboration dynamic and intellectual dynamic in IAIED. Then we overlay the keyword analysis on top of the co-authorship networks to unveil how researchers carve out an intellectual space under the big “umbrella” of the primary topics to establish their academic identity.
