Designing an Accessible User Experience Study for Undergraduate Students With Disabilities

Abstract

Assessing the accessibility and usability of self-directed online learning objects and educational web content is becoming more and more common in higher education, including in academic libraries. However, the participants chosen for this user experience testing do not always feature the perspectives of students with disabilities. So how can educators ensure their online learning content is accessible and usable for students with disabilities? This paper outlines the planning, preparing, and conducting of an accessible user experience study with students with disabilities at an academic library of a large research university. Even though this study assessed the accessibility and usability of an online library research guide, findings and conclusions could be utilized to test any online learning object.
