Abstract

Portable Augmented Reality (AR) has only been practical recently. AR has already been used in various industrial applications to improve efficiency, quality, and safety. However, the most effective usage of AR in training is not as well understood. We explore the potential for AR to facilitate training and performance improvement in the context of railroad inspection. 11 individuals from a major US Railroad participated in the study. Our results suggested that railroad users and management had concerns regarding the practical use of AR on the field, but felt comfortable with the useful features for training purposes. The participants also found various features such as data collection, voice recording, and measuring capabilities useful.
