Oversuspended and Underenrolled: Exploring the Relationship Between Black Girls' Suspension Rates and Enrollment in Advanced Placement STEM Coursework

Abstract

For decades, Black girls have been overrepresented in school suspension rates and underrepresented in advanced coursework—particularly in the math and sciences (STEM). Data supports that schools that rely heavily on exclusionary school discipline also tend to enroll less students in Advance Placement (AP) classes. Using data from the 2020 Civil Rights Data Collection, this multiple regression analysis explores if there is a relationship between Black girls’ Advance Placement (AP) course enrollment and their school suspension rates.
