Purpose of the study was to investigate economically disadvantaged gifted students’ experiences in talent development in science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) through specialized residential science high schools (SRSHS). Five economically disadvantaged students who were preferentially admitted to SRSHS were interviewed on their experiences from early childhood to college. Thematic analysis approach used for data analyses revealed that STEAM talent was recognized early, but they studied advanced mathematics by themselves until they enter SRSHS. Limited learning opportunities before SRSHS caused them to struggle with extremely accelerated math curriculum at SRSHS. Some lost interest in mathematics to change their focus to science research. Experiences of research with mentors were the most meaningful for their plan for future career.
