Digital Learning Collaborative: Evaluating the Learning Transfer of a Collaborative Online Course Development Program

Abstract

In this study, we utilized Kirkpatrick’s training evaluation model to evaluate how faculty perceive Digital Learning Collaborative program we created to support faculty course developers with experienced learning designers. We collected data from fifteen faculty participants regarding their perceptions, learning, and transfer using questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and design assessments. The findings revealed that participants had overall positive perceptions of the program, gained intended design knowledge/skills and principles, and were able to transfer their knowledge/skills to design other courses regardless of modality. Based on these findings, recommendations were made to assist higher education leaders, faculty, and learning design staff on the far-reaching benefits and practical implications of collaborative course design and the critical importance of their design in facilitating learning transfer.
